蚊子是屬于昆蟲。生活史可分成四個階段：
1．卵：
蚊子的卵根據種類的不同可能產在水面、水邊或水中三種不同的位置，水面上的如按蚊和家蚊，水邊的如伊蚊。按蚊和家蚊約在二天內孵化，而伊蚊則在三至五天。
2．幼蟲：
蚊子的幼蟲稱為孑孓。孑孓用吸管呼吸。身體細長，呈深褐色，在水中上下垂直游動，以水中的細菌和單細胞藻類為食，呼吸氣。如庫蚊（家蚊）的孑孓尾端具有1條長呼吸管，管端為呼吸器的開口，呼吸時，身體與水面成一角度，使呼吸管垂直于水面，攝食有機物及微生物，口的刷毛會產生水流，流向嘴巴；按蚊（瘧蚊）無呼吸管，孑孓尾端的呼吸器開口于身體表面，呼吸時，身體與水面平行。這個時期維持10～14天以后，孑孓經4次蛻皮后發育成蛹，由蛹再羽化為成蚊。
3．蛹：

4．成蟲：
新出生的蚊子在翅膀沒有硬（羽化）之前無法起飛。雄蚊在羽化后24小時之內其腹節第八節以后全部反轉180°完成交配姿勢。交配的動作因種類而有不同，有的黃昏時刻在田野廣曠或草地之處形成蚊柱作群舞。
蚊柱不一定單純由一種雄蚊聚集而成，往往有幾種不同蚊種集合而成。此時雌蚊見到群舞光景，就飛近蚊柱與同種雄蚊交配離去。交配通常需要10～25秒。雌蚊一生只交配一次，交配后由雄性副腺分泌的液體，形成交配栓于雌登革熱配孔內，但逐漸溶解，約于24小時后*消失。一生只交配一次，后其一生（90多天后）產下的卵尚可受精。
習性
1．孳生習性：
